It’s important to register the birth of your bub. It helps them access rights and opportunities like enrolling in day care, school and sports.

What you need to know about registering bub
- It’s free
- Hospitals do not register bub for you
- Medicare and Centrelink do not register bub for you
- It’s bub’s right to be registered within 8 weeks of birth
There are 3 ways to register bub
Online—you can register a birth online. It takes about 20 minutes and you will need 2 forms of ID (such as driver licence, Medicare card, or birth certificate) for both parents. Don’t have 2 forms of ID for both parents? Call us on 13 74 68 – we’re here to help.
By post—request a birth registration form and we will post it out to you. It’s free to post it back to us using the reply-paid envelope.
In person—fill in the birth registration form at your local courthouse or Queensland Government Agent Program office, or come in to see us on level 32, 180 Ann Street Brisbane City.
Legal recognition of traditional child rearing practice
Torres Strait Islander people can apply to the Office of the Commissioner (Meriba Omasker Kaziw Kazipa) for legal recognition of Ailan Kastom child rearing practice.
Legal Aid Queensland, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Legal Services (ATSILS) and Queensland Indigenous Family Violence Legal Services (QIFVLS) are available to provide free legal advice and assist with the process of applying to the Commissioner for a Cultural Recognition Order.

Our Kids Count is the Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages' campaign to increase birth registrations in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.
Our Kids Count is part of our 3-year Closing the Registration Gap strategy.
The Birthing Tree
The leaves of the tree represent the generations that have come before us. The roots of the tree is a strong foundation which helps to build and grow a better future for our kids, because we count and our kids count.
